SOME MUMS (ARE FAT MOLLS)

A new book by written Nelly Thomas, Illustrated by Cat MacInnes

“Ya Fat moll” was the first heckle Nelly ever received on stage, almost 20 years ago.

It wasn’t the last.

Nelly has published 3 wildly successful children’s books - Some Girls, Some Boys and Some Brains - and has decided to continue the theme, but for grown-ups.

This time she’s off the leash and in Some Mums (are Fat Molls), Nelly brings her trademark wit, charm, salty language and humour - all with a good dose of feminist fire - to what is sure to become a mum classic.

ABOUT THE BOOK

This is the book author Nelly wishes she was given as a new mum. Or for Mother’s Day. Or at any time, really.

Rebuffing the usual bullshit served up to modern mums.

For adult humans.

With swear words.

Why is so much stuff that’s directed at mothers so saccharine? Even infantalizing? Why do we view mothering itself through the lens of a Hallmark card? Why do we bulls*it new mothers - all mothers - and then wonder why so many feel wrong? Mums are human adults with needs just like anyone else: we laugh, love, cry, swear, have sex, judge, fight, imbibe and feel all the feels. Mothering is amazing, sh*t, glorious, hard, impossible, divine, the best thing you ever did and the biggest mistake of your life. It’s all the things. Nelly suspects being a mum would be a hell of a lot lot easier if mums were taught to trust ourselves and be ourselves in the role.

Some Mums (are Fat Molls) takes us through many of the stereotypes (mum as angel), advice (do it MY way), pressure (be perfect), unrealistic expectations (you will always get it right), hypocrisy (work hard - but not too much!) and other confusing - and undermining - messages directed at modern mums. It takes those messages and shows them for what they are: other people’s crap.

We Say:

If there’s love and care, all mums can be whoever the &*^$ they want.

(No, it’s not a kid’s book)
