THE TALK

Nelly's DVD for teenagers about sex and relationships

The Talk is DVD about safe sex for teenagers.

It was created and written by Nelly Thomas and produced in consultation with the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre and the Centre Against Sexual Assault at the Royal Women’s Hospital.

The DVD is funny and fun and contains interviews with celebrities and public figures that young people can relate to including Leigh Matthews, Lehmo and Cal Wilson.

The DVD is hosted by Nelly and features a mixture of humorous and entertaining sketches, songs and comedy, as well as interviews with health and other experts from relevant fields.

Of course The Talk covers off on the physical aspects of sex: the nuts and bolts of anatomy and sexual health; but importantly, it also addresses the emotional aspects of sex.

The Talk recognises that sometimes the hardest part about sex is not about the physical but the mental, and talks about establishing and maintaining respectful relationships.

The idea is that parents and carers:

1. BUY THE DVD

2. WATCH IT WITH THEIR KIDS

3. TALK ABOUT SEXUAL HEALTH AND ETHICS

Why make The Talk?

Nelly Thomas wrote, produced and performed in sexual health and ethics shows for teenagers for over a decade.

One thing she heard repeatedly was that parents knew they should have "The Talk" with their kids, but had no idea how to start the conversation or what to say.

They were worried about things like:

  • Would they say the wrong thing?

  • Would they look stupid?

  • What if the kids ask about their sexual history?!?!

Nelly made this DVD to help parents and carers with the job. The idea is that parents sit down with their kids, watch the DVD, get the info and resources they need, and start the conversation.

By: Amanda Wimetal, Health Promotion Worker, Women's Health West

One of the most uncomfortable conversations for many parents and their children is also one of the most important. Wouldn't it be great if you had some help? Nelly Thomas is the quintessential 'cool aunt' in her delivery of The Talk... Easily relatable to both parents and young people, her approach is comprehensive and humorous... Friendly but firm... the DVD enables the critical conversations that will equip young people to take care of their sexual health."
